When individuals with intellectual disabilities reach the age of maturity, when cognitive disease affects an individual, or when individuals reach an age where they no longer have the mental faculties to meaningfully participate in their medical or financial decisions, a guardianship is often sought by a close family member or friend. When a guardian is appointed, that individual has the ability to make economic or financial decisions on behalf of another person.
