It is appropriate to have a guardian appointed when an individual is truly unable to make decisions for him or herself, even with assistance. Appointment of a guardian is often appropriate in the event of dementia, Alzheimer, and intellectual disabilities. Typical situations where a guardianship is sought, but may be inappropriate include drug and alcohol addiction, treatable mental illness, and general poor decision making. It is appropriate to consult with an attorney to determine whether or not a guardianship would be appropriate in an individual situation.
